Overview

Azad’s Men for Gender Justice (MGJ) Programme involves engaging men and boys in discussions and activities to promote gender equality, challenge harmful stereotypes around patriarchy and masculinity, and address issues related to gender-based violence, discrimination and sharing of unpaid care work. It involves men as allies in the fight for gender justice and empowers them to be active participants in promoting women’s rights and gender equality.

Key components of the programme include forming support groups around themes such sports and theatre to discuss gender issues and challenge traditional notions of masculinity and gender roles; conducting workshops, awareness activities, film screenings, and informal discussions to enable participants to question gender-based injustice and restrictive masculinity; and encouraging participants to engage with other men in their families and communities to change harmful attitudes and behaviours towards women.

Stories of Change

1

“My sister’s life is her own, and she has the right to choose her path.”

Moin, once skeptical about gender equality, transformed through Azad’s MGJ programme. Influenced by his aunt Wajida, who is an alumni feminist leader of Azad, and the leadership training in Azad, he began participating in household chores and supporting gender equality. He now values his sister’s right to make her own choices and has positively influenced his brothers to do the same. Moin has also become more supportive and friendly with his mother and sister, strengthening their bond.

“The MGJ program transformed my views on gender roles and helped me embrace women’s leadership.”

Initially uninterested in household chores, Ghanshyam’s participation in Azad’s Men for Gender Justice program reshaped his understanding of gender roles. He learned that household chores often deemed ‘easy’ are actually challenging. The training also transformed his views on women’s leadership and rights of LGBTQIA+ community, fostering a belief in gender equality. Now actively raising awareness on women’s empowerment, education, and employment through street plays and community activities, Ghanshyam aims to spread his newfound knowledge and contribute to societal change.
